That increase in screen size doesn’t sound like much, until you start playing your old games and realize that everything is 16.7 percent bigger. The dual screens now measure 3.5 inches diagonally, larger than the Nintendo DS Lite’s 3-inch screens, though the resolution is the same. Nintendo is emphasizing that the DSi is for those who want to customize their system, so I expect to see more apps like the ones that let you change photos and sound recordings. You can manipulate the images and sounds you capture with the DSi, with filters that make your head look like an alien’s and your voice sound like a bird’s. And because the DSi connects to Wi-Fi, it’s also good for video chats. You can’t use them simultaneously - not yet, at least - but the images are surprisingly good. Two 0.3 megapixel cameras - one facing you as you game, and one on the exterior, ready to snap pictures of the outside world. My opinion: It’s a must-have for Nintendo fans, but PlayStation Portable and iPod Touch owners won’t feel they’re missing much. Nintendo this week updated the Nintendo DS - the world’s most popular hand-held game system - and I’ve been spending a lot of quality time with this $170 machine, dubbed the DSi.
